Feeding wild birds in own back yard or when travelling

Anyone can feed wild birds in your back yard or when travelling, although for those people who do not have enough room in their own back yard for a bird aviary, you can still interact with beautiful wild birds.  Like humans birds are doing it tough with governments chopping down their trees where they shelter from the weather and build their nests to rear their young.

What with the droughts, floods and fires in many areas a lot of their natural habitat is being destroyed.  Although on the brighter side at least birds are better off as they can fly away to safety during these, whereas marsupials do not stand a chance with these types of natural disasters.

Because of this we need to do our bit to keep these beautiful birds happily breeding each year and living in their natural trees and habitat so as they do not become another extinct statistic.

Everyone can do something no matter how small it can still help.  Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

• Plant suitable sized trees and shrubs in your garden (size will depend on the size of your property)
• If you are lucky enough to have trees in your garden then buy or make nest boxes and tie them up in the trees or shrubs
• Place water containers or bird baths in your yard
• Hang bird seed feeders so they can obtain food without injuring themselves. (More instructions later in this article)

No matter where you go for your next holiday you can still help our birds.  Here are a few ideas for you to try:

• If you are driving in the bush and happen to stop for a break in a picnic area; then sprinkle a few left over bread crumbs on or around the picnic table
• If you see a tap, try to find something that will hold water and fill it and leave under the tap. If people come to get a drink or rinse their hands the container will fill up again.  If there are no taps then share some of your drinking water.
• If you have any leftover fruit do not place it in the bins leave out for the birds to pick from them, apples, pears, oranges are the best for any birds.
• Left over lettuce can be put out for the birds.  Only do this if there is no oil or seasoning on the leaves.
