How to Burn Calories with Household Chores
75Everyone has to do house cleaning chores at least once a week although most of us do it daily as it is quicker if you do a bit at a time and not leave it to do all at once. The thing is if you are overweight then this is the ideal way to lose weight.
A big part of losing weight is burning calories. So learn how to burn calories as you do your household chores. It is quite simple when you think about it. You need to be more active. I know but house cleaning is boring I hear you say. No, not if you do it to music. Instead of dragging your feet from one room to the other with the vacuum cleaner, put on some lively music and jig around using all those lazy muscles that badly need some exercise.

Washing the dishes
Forget the dish washer wash the dishes by hand and instead of drying a pile of things and putting them in the cupboard all at once. Dry one at a time and walking sideways put each article away and walk back to the sink and get another. Side stepping movements are good exercise for the muscles and you are burning more calories.
Washing the windows
Oh Yuk, I cannot clean windows if you paid me. They end up looking worse than before I started. But nevertheless they need to be done and remember that as you do them you are burning up those very important calories that you need to burn and exercising your arms and shoulders.
Washing the floors and Vacuuming
Whether you sweep or vacuum the floors will make no difference because you are still burning calories. The main thing is to put more moving action into this job. If you put some music on you will find yourself more able to jig about and you drag the mop, vacuum or broom across the floors.
Another good idea is to wash your kitchen tiles by getting down on your hands and knees and giving the tiles a real good scrub. Quite often we do not really look at the discoloration of our kitchen and bathroom tiles. So by getting down close to the floor you may be surprised to see that the tiles are really filthy. This is your chance to burn up more calories and give your body more exercise.
Cleaning your Carpets
Why pay someone to clean your carpets when you can do it your self and burn calories at the same time. Many of the carpet cleaners today are so easy to use. They are light to push back and forth. No hard work at all and you are giving your bodies that extra exercise.
Hanging out your washing
I know its cold outside during the winter months. Although instead of throwing all that washing into the dryer you make yourself walk outside and hand your washing up on the clothes line your are also exercising your whole back by bending down and reaching up with each item. So how can that be a bad thing, it isn’t. You are doing what your body needs to do, exercise. Even folding up the washing is still burning a few more calories.

Collecting the mail
Do not walk to the mail box and straight back inside. Stop to look at your garden. Are there any dead flower heads that need picking off? Do this and they will produce a more prolific display of blooms in your garden. Bend down and pull out a few weeds, by doing a few each day it will prevent having to do a big backbreaking chore all at once and you are burning calories.
Healthy diet
I know this is a calorie burning article. If you eat lots of chocolates, pastries, and high calorie foods then you are defeating the purpose. So remember to eat healthy at the same time as burning those calories and you will definitely see a difference in reducing your weight.
No you do not have to stop eating some of those things, just reduce the amount by using common sense and eat more healthily with fresh vegetables grown in your own garden.
Gardening
This is also great way to workout, by digging up a small patch in your yard and planting healthy greens, like broccoli, peas, beans cucumbers and zucchini. Or you could grow some carrots, radishes and by growing them yourself you will know that they are chemical free.
By spending ten minutes each week pulling out a few weeds and then picking your wonderful produce you have not only burnt more calories you have your own fresh vegetables to enjoy and eat healthier.
Mowing the lawns and walking the dog will also burn up some calories and I am sure the dog would really love you more for the effort. No matter what you do around your house, make a conscious effort to put more oomph into the job. As you should now realize it will not only help you to burn more calories it will be giving your body the exercise that it badly needs to keep your bones and muscles working.
I know when you are young you do not realize how much your bodies need this exercise. So many people sit about watching TV or sitting in front of the computer screen that their bodies do not get the needed movement to keep their bodies fit. You see overweight people every day on the television, some of them can hardly walk because their weight is putting so much stress on their legs and feet.
Everyone needs to take a hard look in the mirror and ask themselves, am I doing enough exercise to keep my body active. If the answer is no then, how about making the effort before it is toooooo late. Your health is what is going to suffer. Can you afford to spend time off work through illness that you could have avoided?
Make an effort to help yourself now!

Excellent hub. Your ideas are practical and beneficial to
everyone. Thank you.
Hey there Eileen. Very cool hub. It makes me feel better knowing I am burning calories when I do dishes. lol Very useful hub. Voted UP and USEFUL. Take care.
Very good points. It's great to have a house with stairs too. You can burn a lot of calories walking up and down the stairs 20x a day.
Great advice Eileen. I have been working up a sweat today doing chores. Ironing is supposed to be good at burning calories but who irons any more :)
what a great hub Eileen!! got me motivated so I am off to do the floors and jig about!!bb
EXCELLENT, Eileen! I could not agree more!! Pulling weeds, raking and picking up leaves - wow - you can feel the workout! Even squeegying & wiping down the shower after each showering is good - stretching the arms, bending - or better, squatting down to get to the lower part of the walls, then squeegying the shower floor - as you say - all good toning and using the muscles. And I love the addition of music!! Yeah! - Lively music!!
And even such other routine things we do all the time, such as getting up from chairs. I make it a point to raise myself up by my LEGS, never pushing up with my hands. Well - one exception is if I've fallen asleep on the couch and must make a bee-line to the loo upon awakening hours later. That extra "pulling" of those muscles is not the advantage right THEN. Better to grab my knee and pull up and outta there. haha.
Practicing good posture in all activities is good, too. Sitting, walking, climbing stairs, even lying down & sleeping (other than on the couch!) - keep a good alignment - it uses a lot of muscles. And when doing a static chore - from washing dishes to brushing teeth - stand on one foot yoga-style. Good for balance, too, and at - ahem - some ages, it's wise to have a good sense of balance and avoid that "fallen and can't get up" business. Even putting your legs into your jeans without hanging onto to something is good exercise and good balance-training!
By all means, yes - healthy eating!! 70% of the daily intake should be fresh fruits and veggies. And lots of water.
I'm hoping this hub will inspire me to get cleaning! I never think of it being exercise, but you're right - anything that gets you up off the couch counts. I do have an image of my husband laughing hysterically at me sidestepping around the kitchen though!
This was fun to read. Doing chores is a good way to get exercise. There are times when I add a little music to it as well. Voted-up/rated!
I was without my laptop for a few days (but buying a separate mouse seems to make everything fine again) - so I plunged into cleaning - and it seems I have more energy than ever. Over just 4-5 days I got rid of so much clutter, and shredding old bills, and polished stuff - and well, if you look upon this as exercise - very positively - it can work well. Yay!
How great is it that you can lose weight while doing something you have to do. Great hub - great ideas.
Great hub. It actually cheered me up, so now I will start cleaning my house like a mad woman!
