How to dry out that beautiful home grown lavender from your garden
For centuries, women have put lavender on their handkerchiefs, and the Romans have added lavender to their bath water. Many use Lavender oil for body massage. Others use lavender as a soothing insect repellant.

How to dry out your lavender
To collect your precious lavender from your own home garden you will need:
- Secateurs
- Rubber bands
- Newspaper
- a) Select stems with the flowers opening and using secateurs cut as long a stem as possible.
- b) Place several stems together and secure them with a rubber band. The rubber band will shrink as lavender dries out. Stems can fall out, if tied with string, as it does not shrink.
- c) Hang stems with flowers facing down. Keep out of sunlight, allowing it to dry naturally. They can be hung in a wardrobe, which will make your clothes smell nice. This should take up to 3 weeks. Place something like newspaper underneath to catch any that fall when dried.
- d) When dry remove the buds from the stems. Remove leaves from the stems.
Make use of your dried lavender by making your own mixture of potpourri, lavender wreaths, lavender bottles, or you could make lavender lemonade.

Lavender grows wild here, in Spain, but I can't now remember what it looks like. I believe that in Switzerland where I am from thy make "little mice" of lavender leaves. You prepare a liquid dough, a mix of egg, flour, and water or milk, and you take a lavender leaf by its stem and dip it into that dough and then throw it into hot oil where it gets baked and swells and ends up looking like (the idea of) a mouse; the stem of the leaf has become a mousetail.

Lavender is supposed to help you sleep if you put a sprig inside your pillow.
Beats me, Yes I have heard that too. I should try it as I am not a good sleeper.
Hi Eileen. Lavenders are also used on scented candles. They say lavenders help you sleep better at night. I don't know how true that is, though.
Great tips Eileen! This is a very good hub.
