How to help the homeless people and yourself
76Why are there so many homeless people living in poor conditions on the streets or doorways? Is it because there are not enough homes? No, even if there were more housing facilities available some of these people would still live on the streets, it has become a way of life to them. Many people do not realize that these homeless people are not there because they are lazy drug addicts or alcoholics. It is far more serious than that.
From my own personal research into this subject I found that many are there because of domestic violence situations or teenagers and younger children running away from home Homelessness affects millions of people all over the world, and they are not all old, many of these are teenagers and even children as young as eight or nine years of age. Which makes me ask again why is this happening especially to so many children? Why can’t the powers to be do something to reduce this problem?
Many celebrities have donated millions of dollars to a variety of homeless organizations and yet it is like a speck on the ocean. There are so many homeless people all over the world that it will take more than money alone.
The majority of people are so wrapped up in their own daily schedules, that they do not appreciate how lucky they are. And completely ignore that homeless people exist, or choose deny the knowledge of their existence. Yes they may offer a donation when prompted, but would never consider to do something themselves to help these needy people.
Wealthy or less fortunate
Why does the less fortunate person give more of themselves and their possessions than a very wealthy person? And why does a wealthy person always tell you how much they paid for something, especially if it is cost in the thousands. Whereas a lesser wage earner would just show someone what they had bought. This has always fascinated me.
Donate unwanted items
First go through our homes and sort through our clothes and cupboards for things that we no longer wear or use. Go through the kid’s rooms and look for items of clothing that the children have outgrown or toys they no long play with. You might even find some food in the cupboards that you bought a heap when on special and found you didn’t like it.
You can bundle these up and take them down to the homeless shelters. You can be sure that these things will be appreciated.
How to help the homeless and yourself
I am sure that everyone could spend an hour or so every week or month helping others less fortunate than themselves. Or walk in and help whenever you have any spare time. Not only will it help the homeless people and lessen the load on other volunteers it will help yourself more than you realize.
You learn that voluntary work will make you feel so much better as a person, simply because you can make a personal difference to someone else’s life with a little effort on your part by offering your time.
Work at a shelter- Anyone can volunteer to help feed the homeless or work in soup kitchens.
Sorting clothes for the Salvation Army- Donations are appreciated, although someone still has to sort out the suitable goods from the rubbish.
Make use of your talents- If you are an office worker, offer to answer the phones, help with any paper work and accounts.
Professional people- can offer their time and professional services free. This could be doctors, teachers, or dental services.
Spread the word- Tell other people about the work you are doing and encourage them to help out too.
We cannot help everyone, although every little bit that you can do will make a difference. Not only to the homeless person to the person inside you as well. Once you have helped people less fortunate than you, you will appreciate your own life and realize how lucky you really are and never take things for granted again.
Remember, above all show respect to these people as you never know, if your circumstances change and go downhill, you could end up being just like them.
other hubs
- Just three little words- Are you Ok
On the 29th of November 2009 they held a RUOK day. I read about it in our local news paper. It was a national day of action for the prevention of suicide. The message they wanted to get through is for people... - Working with animals larger ones
Are you thinking of starting a career working with animals? Have you given a thought as to which kind of animal you would like to work with? There are also many types of jobs involved in this type of career....

This hub gives cool ideas about homeless people. And also interested in knowing that where are they putting their new modern buildings.
Wonderful Hub. I believe a lot of them lack the resources of information available to them and the system fails to recognize the importance of just putting a roof over someones head. I've notice two counties away from where I live there are "Tent" cities, constructed much like those in the depression era. This should not be. Your compassion is enormous in the Hub, God bless you and yes others can help the needy if they would just take the time out to advocate for those less fortunate.
You've made some good observations and suggestions here. Thanks for a thought-provoking article.
Hi Eileen, a topic that needs all of the exposure that it can get. Many of us are in denial about this situation and many just say that the homeless are lazy. To have a home and a job is a blessing and many people don't realize that it can take just one major event to make one homeless. Great work and reseach, thank you for reminding us of our responsibility to one another.
wonderful hub! so many great points :)
The answer to "question #1" is the fact that those with less have more to give because they know the Lord better than those with wealth....Jesus called the fisherman and carpenters to be his diciples, not the rich....The rich people should learn something very basic in that one statement. It is better to give that to receive, and in the end, it will all be taken away from you anyhow, so why not show God what a good person you are and share it??
Great hub, great hub!!
I started out by working at a shelter now I created my website and help that way. I did well in life and it is only proper to give back.
Good topic eileen, I am sitting in the car right now due to someone being upset at home. I am not big on the salvation army though, as they are the far right of the liberal party here and I do beleive that a healthy social housing policy would stop alot of this and I have sent this policy idea to the Prime Minister, yet he only seems to use the ideas I send without copyright.
Developers make over 120% they often also have part ownership in the loan brokerage companies that fund developments and are thus earning extraordinary profits. Add a good social housing component to developments and housing estates and you might see a change in outcomes. Not a getto based housing system that maintains an under class.

WA was doing quite well before the minerals boom and the bizarre increases in housing costs there were astronomical. People forget that if you increase property prices to far, you just create greater payments for mortgages, so if they dont get you via the interest rate, they get you by increasing the cost of the building... same people.. just different way of maintaining control
Wow! What good information. Homelessness is a problem that keeps on growing and we, as a society, need to adopt the mindset demonstrated in this article: reaching out and helping the less fortunate.
Your point about donating unwanted items is sound. While so many people will just toss out a blanket or old comforter, these items could help someone to stay warm. A person in desperate circumstances will not care if a comforter is old--just that it helps to keep them warm.
Eileen, I am just like them, only my family has money and helps me out since my business failure. I never stop being grateful for how easy I have it in comparison to so many less fortunate. I inherited my home, without which I would not be earning enough on my current part time job to pay my monthly bills. Sometimes I still don't earn enough to pay them, and my family steps in and helps. It is easy for me to understand how people become homeless in the current recession, and I would also be homeless without a somewhat wealthy family, and parents who worked hard all of their lives and left me a home. Too often people are proud, when they should be grateful. Thanks for this hub. (: v
Eileen, as always a great hub and good advice. There is nothing more fulfilling than to help someone who needs it. Caring about others is most important and healthy. Thanks for sharing.
It is important to remember, we may not be able to help everyone, but we can help someone.
If everyone would do what they could the world would be a better place.

I wrote a similiar hub article about a homelessman I met named Rodney. It is called the plight of the homeless. I enjoyed your article and I am glad you are trying to educate people about this issue. Joanne Kathleen Farrell
