Long hours of Darkness
47The drip drip of the tap
beats a tattoo in the sink,
the tic tic of the clock
matches my heart beat,
the minutes and hours drag by.
In frustration I kick off the sheets
exposing my body
to the mosquito hovering above,
I reach for the spray,
once again he finds his target.
Restlessly I rise
and heat a glass of milk
swallowing it slowly,
hopefully, I climb back into bed
again I toss and turn,
sleep still won't come.
Sounds of laughter
filter through the night
as someone wanders merrily home.
I still hear the drip drip of the tap
the tic tic of the clock.
At last hours later my eyelids close
as the sun starts its upward climb over the horizon
ending the long, long hours of darkness.
Mosquito found its target

Sleep is such bliss when it comes to you
I know that I am not the only person to suffer through many nights especially in the summer from lack of sleep.
It is so frustrating when you start to doze off and then you hear that horrible sound of someone coming home or an idiot doing a wheelie down the road. Gosh I would like to ring their neck.
It takes ages to settle down again and then when you finally do it the bl...y alarm blares and you wonder where the night went.
Hopefully you do not suffer from this problem too often. It will only cause you more stress before the day begins. Sleep soundly, at least I hope you can.

Hi Eileen - I really enjoyed the poem, especially because sometimes I can't sleep. I get up and eat a sip of yogurt. and that may help. Now I will remember your poem. A good night's sleep is what Heaven may be like. My husband is a good sound sleeper, and I envy him. Like the mosquito and its relationship to poem.
I have had so many of those nights. For me, when it's like that, I am so glad to see the daylight. I'm better now, thank goodness, it used to night, after night, after night..........................I'm on to the next one, I really enjoy poetry!
Good poem. Night are long when you can't sleep and you expressed it well.
I have certainly been there and done that. It is an awful feeling. This is such a nice presentation of the fact...
Thanks for sharing
How much annoys this tiny creature at night.
After living in Fiji for 20 years I can really relate to the mosquito part... that annoying buzzing sound that wakes you up when it stops :). Thanks, I really enjoyed this.
this is really great Eileen, thanks, you can almost imagine yourself there and here the drip drip drip.... tonight I'll probably dream about that drip drip and drip and in the morning be wandering around angry unable to blame you... *laughs*
Very poetic. I enjoyed this. Oh, how many sleepless nights! And oh, how many times has drifting off been interrupted with that soft buzz.. requiring instant wakefulness or else!
Darkness is sometimes the hardest time to sleep and is the one time we think themost.
I love the contrast of someone wandering merrily home vs. the imagery of restlessness.
Your words create a vivid picture!

Thanks Brake12, I share your problems with a good sleeping husband. I lay awake for hours and he just goes to bed and off to sleep. Thanks for your comments
