Restless Legs or Silly Legs
I suffer from restless legs or some people refer to them as silly legs.
For anyone that doesn't know what this is - When you go to bed at night and you are laying there you get a funny feeling in your legs, the best way for me to describe it is as though something is crawling in or on your leg.
It is very frustrating, I lay for hours trying to sleep and have heard many many other people suffer the same symptoms. It is as though you just cannot keep your leg still, I thrash about for hours.
I have tried manipulation from a chiropractor, and to this day I am not sure if that works. Simply because I never know when it will happen. I may get it 3-4 nights a week then I am ok for a couple of weeks then it starts again.
It is not painful, as in pain. But it is sometimes, although not bad pain. I have tried to drink hot milk before going to bed, sometimes with brandy in it. And take a couple of panadol. I have used a heat bag (wheat) on my legs or on base of spine and sometimes I fool myself into thinking that it helps.
Sometimes I place a pillow under my knees, which takes the pressure from your back.
I would be interested to hear from anyone else who has this problem and if they have any bright ideas that can help ease this frustrating problem.
Look forward to hearing from you. cheers.
Just found some Old Grannie reccommendations
- Take Vitaman E Tablets
- Use hot or cold compress or heat bags on base of spine
- Rub Tea Tree oil or Goanna oil into your legs.
Recently found this helpful idea. Seems to help
Magnesium capsules - they appear to be helping me, I am taking one capsule a day and have not had this problem for a couple of weeks

so happy to hear i'm not alone with the restless leg problem.... i have taken magnesium tablets one daily during 30 days and yes it really helps...
Wow it is so nice to see I am not alone with this restless legs of mine. The one and only thing that helps me to to lay on my bed and put both me legs up against the wall. I will wiggle me legs while they are up and will stay this way until I feel they are almost numb then I lay down and try to fall asleep as fast as I can before the feeling comes back into my legs lol.
Another very good way to lessen the effects of RLS is to go for a long walk before bed and also to stretch your whole body but focusing on your legs, just do every leg stretch you know and hold it for longer then you normally would.
Thanks Eileen, I'm glad I stopped in because I now have something new to try! I'll add the vitamin E to my arsenal. Great hub.
My son did the same things RLS. The only things that help him is the Natural Calm from Peter Gillham it is a miracle powder that help him relax, help him eat more, no more restless legs and sleep good at night. If you need info where to order my email address is redijohns@sbcglobal.net.

I was so glad when I finally discovered what I suffered from for years had a name...and i did some research....Horse Chestnut is great...helps with circulation...massage is great....warmth is great....exercise is great....ibuprofen if you can take it helps...fish oil helps (Internal supplements, not as a leg rub....toooo stinky) make sure it's coated so you don't burp "fish" and so does ---last but not least....Magnesium Citrate. Not found at Wal Mart. Has to be Citrate. great for muscles....and even constipation. Take the Q10 as well for daily circulation health....now we all rattle when we walk....yes?

Ooh, I got this almost every day when I was pregnant, and occasionally before or since. It's murder! Massage sometimes helps, but not usually enough. I did find when I was pregnant that the more active I was during the day, the less trouble I had at night, but even that wasn't a given.
sorry, a mistake repeat
Hi Eileen, if you are open to it, you might start reading about Brain Gym (do a google search). It is a program recently developed from the understanding of how chi energy flows through meridians (oriental medicine) and how it affects us. physical Yoga is another good source for understanding energy flow
For various reasons our flow of energy gets stuck/blocked, and we need to do particular movements that will help get it flowing again. There may also be some emotional/mental activities that can help. Once you find some particular movements that are helpful, the emotional/mental needs will become clear.
Remember we are beings of spiritual, mental, emotional and physical awareness, as well as being affected by our environments. (see my hubs on WLP[wholistic lifestyle planning] and "A Brief look at Two Wholistic Modalities).
Take Care
Your'e not wrong. I have tried all sorts of things. and pillows under legs but it just takes its toll. I can lay in bed for hours and not sleep. Its a pain, because I would rather sit up till midnight and then go to sleep.
On the weekend We went down south in caravan. There was a power failure so Husband went to bed, I sat up for ages looking out window and eventually wento bed, I was still awake at 3 am. Then it started raining and gave up about 4 am was last time I looked at clock. Yes I know it is fatal to have a clock near you, because you keep looking at it. But that way I know whether to get up and do something or hope for the best. Have fun Eileen
Oh, I know what you mean! Luckily I only have this problem when I fly on a plane. The only thing that helps me is to lie on the floor with my legs up in the air (or propped against a wall).
As you can imagine, that's not that easy on a plane though! Once I got so desperate on a long flight that I went into the toilet, and managed to wedge myself with my back on the toilet seat and mylegs against the wall. Ah, the relief!
Then I realised I was stuck....
I did finally manage to get out (landing with a huge thud on the toilet floor). I'm sure the hosties must have wondered what on earth I was doing!

Ann, I take one each morning and night. But still have those terrible nights of sleeplessness every now and then at least once a week. And oh boy those nights really drag, cannot wait until daylight.
My husband tells me to get up and read a book until I am too tired to do anything else. But that doesnt work either.
