Mold Allergy symptoms
Allergies to Mold can affect people of all ages. Some symptoms are very similar to that of a common cold or flu.
Mold can be found almost anywhere in the world. In particular, mold spores are even in the fresh air that we breathe in everyday. A fungus or mold spore is released into the air, similar to the way that pollen s released from our flowers and plants when disturbed. If you brush up against plants or disturb the leaves when raking up the yard, it will release the spores into the air, causing the same allergic symptoms result.
Mold grows in a variety of places
Mold can grow inside or outside the home on sheds, or any rotting wood or amongst the rocks, and leaves in the back yard. Most people will associate mold with growing in our bathrooms. We notice it mainly in the corners or base of our shower recess, on the tiles, or on the shower curtains. It will grow even in the walls of your home if; they are continually wet or damp. Although, there are many more places where mold grows, for instance:
- In our pillows
- In Refrigerator or esky doors or lids
- Under the kitchen sink
- Around the rim of a washing machine
-
Rubbish bins and carpets
Allergic to Penicillin
It is hard to believe that mold can cause so many different types of allergies to people of any age. You may be more at risk if either of your parents suffered from mold allergies. As my husband is allergic to Penicillin, he is more susceptible to having an allergic reaction to mold. If you are allergic to penicillin there is another reason of concern.
How often have you seen the green mold on cheese? Most people cut the affected area off and eat the rest. However, if you are allergic to penicillin, this is another form of penicillin- and the simple act of cutting off the green affected area is not sufficient, as the cheese will still have penicillin in the whole piece of cheese and will still be enough to cause an allergic reaction.
Many mold sufferers believe they are suffering from a simple cold when in fact it is an allergy to mold causing the flue like symptoms.
Symptoms of Mold
Mold spores normally attach themselves to the lining of our nose, which then causes the various allergy symptoms. The most common and noticeable symptoms from mold are a runny nose, watery and itchy red eyes, hives, headaches and sinus, and difficulty in breathing.
The toxic mold Symptoms could cause, dizziness, nausea, anemia, rashes on your skin, memory loss, difficulty in breathing, and the more serious cases could result in death.
Avoid the risks of mold growing in your home
There are many ways to help avoid the risk of mold contamination, especially in your home. Reduce the amount of dampness by making sure to dry your floors and never store damp clothes in cupboards. Install proper air vents in the bathroom, toilet, and kitchen above the stove.
Repair dripping taps and remove plugs from sinks, which in turn will prevent the leaky tap from overflowing into and under the cupboards. Most sink cupboards are made from malamute or chipboard, which will expand when, wet and retains the water. Make sure the steam from your electric kettle is not causing a buildup of moisture if operated from under the top wall cupboard on your kitchen top, as the vapors will collect under there.
When cleaning the bathroom use mold inhibitors on your bathroom tiles. Make sure there is adequate ventilation in every room of your home, especially during the more humid months of the year when the mold grows. If you are, one of the people affected by mold, then, wear a mask to avoid any contamination.
Who is more likely to have a mold allergy?
People in many different occupations suffer from exposure to mold allergies. They may work in factories, farms, orchards, or plant nurseries. Food fungi may cause a reaction in some people.
It is always better to be sure, so if you have any doubts as to what is causing your allergy, contact your doctor. He will decide whether you need to have a skin test done to verify what type of allergy you have.

Just thought I'd update comments from 4 months ago- radon or Ionizing Radiation does down regulate the Gap Junctional Intracellular Communication and this occurrs at Bilogically accept concentrations which simply means "bloody safe".
Exposure to ultrafine Crsytalline Silica(mining) has been found to also down regulate the GJIC by up to 55% in rats.
All of these exposures may in fact lead to a Genetic change in GJIC and the scary thing is that what is safe individually maybe not be safe in a cumulative or synergistic exposure.

Great hub! I am extremely allergic to mold. I can smell it long before I see it. Mold can be very dangerous and cause serious illnesses.
I'm sending this one to my sister who suffers recurring sinus infections! Well written and informative hub.
Its all a learning curve the fungal its self may not be the source of the problem but lets look at the problem of the chemicals that those fungi produce their called mycotoxins-
a wide range of mycotoxins are tumour promoters and we may jsut find out that its the chemicals from the fungi we are aallergic to- Also chronic low levels of radon can also act on cells in the same way as a tumour promoter. I wonder if Cancer clusters of Breast cancers where low levels of Radon were found maybe associated with exposure also to chronic low levels of Mycotoxins or other tumour promoters like DHEA?

One thing that could go almost undetected together with mold allergy is mental impairment caused by the presence of heavy metals in the local water supply. Here is a story regarding that in my local city

Hi Eileen, I've heard some people die of allergies due to breathing difficulty. But I didn't know that molded cheese is a form of penicillin. Thanks for the info.
I have been getting red eyes, head aches etc for about a year and a half now and never knew wat was causing it. It must be the mold in my house. I am also allergic to penicillin.
Thanks, Eileen, for some vital information. I had bad mold allergies when I lived in Atlanta because of dampness from the great shade, beautiful but dense groundcover, limited crawl space in a sprawling 1930's home, etc. I didn't think about pillows, though. Perhaps those are all reasons I stopped taking allergy pills when I moved to this part of Florida AND started using a different pillow!
I do have a allergy to mold. I recently bought a special nose rinse and I highly recommend to people. I use warm water and you squirt it up one side of your nose first till it comes out the other then repeat on the other the same way. Do this twice with both nostrils. Once a day, can be done twice if you feel your coming down with a cold, it works great.Ever since I haven't had to take any medication for stuffyness.I also buy new pillows once a year.
I had no idea mold could be on our pillows. Thanks for informing me of that.
Great information. I have always been somewhat nervous about mold.
Write On!
Eileen, great hub, I wanted to know more about them. Once my room was flooded with water from upstairs, it began to form mold soon after. I heard if I hadn't reported it, would have been deadlier. So we have to be careful with this. I hope others read your articles. Thanks.
