Time Management Tips for your Home Business
65Home businesses are terrific for many reasons. You do not have to travel, saving you fuel expenses. Nor do you have to spend a lot of money on clothes. Another bonus is you can work your own hours. The disadvantages are you need to be organized, if the children are sick, you still have to cope by juggling the kids and be in control of your business at the same time.
Time management skills are a very important part of running a home business for this reason. Home based business owners know this better than anyone. If you or your family members are sick, the work still goes on; otherwise there is no money at the end of the week for the food or the dreaded bills that keep coming in.
Every business needs to put plans in place; your home business is no different. Your friends and neighbors will no longer be able to call in and natter over that cup of coffee. Time is money; therefore you will need to warn them that weekends may be the best time to catch up in future.

Time Management Tips
Here are a few time management tips to keep you in control of your home business.
Know your priorities
Prioritize your work load - Decide what tasks are the most important for each day. Keep an organizer and put the most important task first. Then add the lesser tasks. Include time for calling suppliers or placing orders, invoicing, paying accounts and banking and unexpected visits from clients. Allow time for promotion of products or sales.
Most importantly allow at least ten minutes every hour to get up from your desk and walk about. This will not only keep the brain more alert, but recharge you for those more impossible tasks.
Plan ahead for tomorrow
Before you finish for the day, make a to-do list for tomorrow. Remember to prioritize the tasks in order of importance. That way you can now relax knowing you have organized everything in readiness for tomorrow.
Time spent away from office
All businesses need time away from the office whether it be purchasing equipment or delivering orders. Make sure to take your mobile phone with you so as not miss any business calls. You a business organizer so you can confirm appointments if someone should ring and not double book an appointment. Also jot down reminders or ideas for things needing to be done.
Allow time for family before work
Manage time with the family before they leave for work and school. Never neglect your family; it is not the kids’ fault that you work from home. They need a little love and attention too. It is very important to keep work at home and family separate.
Internet and email
Home businesses with internet and email can save you time and money. Orders and payments can be made with a push of a button. Gone are the days of using snail mail. Orders can be sent through emails. Account payments can be made through internet banking, or even the more secure payments can be made with PayPal.
Learn to delegate
Working from home has its own problems. Learn to delegate household chores. You may need to employ a cleaning lady to do the washing and ironing or prepare meals. This may be classed as a tax deduction. Better to employ home help, leaving you time to spend with your family.
Other things to do
Here are a few more things you can do:
- Understand where you are wasting time- and fix it – time wasted is money lost - do not encourage private phone calls
- Set goals - Improve product sales – offer better services than your opposition - like pick up or personal delivery, this will depend on type of business. Have magnetic business cards- these are often kept on the fridge
- Improve your filing system - Keep things in set folders for incoming and outgoing products on computer or in filing cabinet
- Remove clutter – keep things in their proper place – one invoice mislaid will reduce your profits - Accounts and papers spread all over the desk could be misplaced. File everything in its proper place.
- Designate an alloted time for different jobs
Children often do not understand why they cannot run in and out of the office expecting to get your attention. At the same time clients do not want to hear children crying or fighting in the background while conducting business.
Time management skills will keep your home business running smoother. Yes a home business is harder to organize because you are in a home environment. Although by following some of these ideas not only will your business be more efficient, you will have more time for your family.

Time management skills are especially important for small business people, who often find themselves performing many different jobs during the course of a single day . Time management tips can help you increase your productivity and stay cool and collected .
Communicating with your family is one of my favorite tips for success when running a home business. I made sure to tell my children my office hours, when I had an important phone call and when I needed their help to complete a task. I found that as long as my family were aware of what was happening with me, they were willing to do anything to help support my home business.
This is good advice. I ran an in-home licensed by the state day care service for seven years. Organization is key. I stopped doing it because I did not own the home, many major problems came up, landlord lost the house, I had to close down business and move. Now I don't think I would like to do day care anymore, however, I am looking in other areas. Thanks for the hub!
Very nice hub! Using the Pareto principle, is also a very good way to focus on the moments that really produce the biggest and best amount of work. Keep the good job.
I just can't find enough hours in the day right now lol.
Very good advice, Eileen. Bookmarked it. --David
